Pórtico building
Madrid, Spain

Size / 23.000 m2
Client / Hines + Monthisa

MIPIM 2007 Award (Best office building in the world completed in 2006)

A “virtual” box constructed with aluminium slats and stainless steel mesh hides in its interior, protecting it from the sun, a glazed “material” box.

The external box is defined by the plot’s buildable volumetric limits. The internal box is the result of the law of the real estate market, with its rigid conditioning factors of open-plan floors, the position of the vertical communications cores, perimeter-surface ratio and glazed facades. At one end the functional box do not reach the edge of the protective enveloping box, providing an unoccupied vacuum which can be considered to be the “pórtico” or arcade which distinguishes and gives its name to the building.
